1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 in 72 will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer over their lifetime. Further, it is estimated that 26,393 women under 45 years of age are diagnosed with breast cancer annually .
 
Both men and women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent are at increased risk of carrying the BRCA gene mutation, which in turn increases their risks for hereditary cancers (breast, ovarian, melanoma, prostate, and pancreatic).  Also, both men and women who are carriers of BRCA gene mutations have a 50% chance of passing it on to the next generation.
 
On Wednesday, February 12th AEPHI Syracuse will be raising awareness with thousands of other students worldwide on Sharsheret Pink Day! Together we will save lives by raising awareness about breast cancer and cancer genetics. The funds collected will support Sharsheret’s programs for the women and families facing cancer and those at increased risk. While here at school, Sharsheret encourages me to learn about my family cancer history, gives me the tools to lead a healthy lifestyle, and empowers me every day to be an advocate for others. My professors at school are educating me so I can lead a successful career, and Sharsheret is enabling me to stay healthy so I can achieve those goals. I am so grateful to Sharsheret!
